Home Offices announces immigration act pilot areas

home-office-770x577

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire has today announced that the pilot of the Immigration Act requirement to ID check all prospective occupiers will be delivered in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

The announcement which has been long awaited within the sector, will specifically mean that landlords in the districts of Sandwell, Walsall and Dudley will be required to ID check all prospective occupiers of properties (not just tenants) from 1st December 2014. This will apply to new tenancies only, landlords will not have to carry this out on tenancies retrospectively.

The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) believe that the new regulations will begin to enshrine best practice into law and will not place undue burden on professional agents who are already meeting the high standards needed within the industry.

ARLA will be working with Regional Representative Sally Lawson, in delivering an Immigration Act 2014 seminar in the pilot area to support members prior to the start date of 1st December. This will ensure that issues are aired and that members are supported through the transition to these new regulations.

In the meantime please share your views and concerns with ARLA via rachelhartley@arla.co.uk
